Cocos Island

On the Sea

Aaron and I loaded up the kayaks for our next adventure. This time we drove south to Merizo Pier, a half hour drive. We kayaked across the boat channel out to Cocos Island. The water was a little choppy and the wind blew us around a little but it was pretty easy going.

Looking back at the island of Guam

Cocos Island is an island 1 mile off the southern tip of Guam, located within the Merizo Barrier Reef. The island is uninhabited, 5,200 ft long in a southwest-northeast direction, but only between 660 ft and 980 ft wide, and has an area of 95.5 acres. It sits atop the southwestern coral reef rim of Cocos Lagoon. The west coast of the island is a resort hotel complex. The east side is public land part of the territorial park system. Ferries run to the island from Merizo.

Once we reached Cocos Island we popped open a brew to celebrate our journey...
AND because we were thirsty!

Aaron ventured into the jungle to get this coconut. He can't help himself! Later that night he husked it and put it in the freezer. He forgot it! The next morning we found a very frozen and cracked coconut in our freezer.

Aaron tracking a bird

Since there are no snakes on Cocos Island, there ARE birds. Something we noticed immediately as we stepped onto the shore.

Turns out, we paddled nearly 4 miles that day. Coming back was a bit of a struggle for me. NOT for Aaron—paddling appeared to be effortless. He also spotted an Eagle Ray jumping out of the water. I missed it, of course!

  1. Your arms must of been sore the next day from paddling? The water was sure pretty, and did look choppy, was making me a bit queasy. You look like islanders with your kayaks on top of your car. Cute. I was thinking the pretzels were making you thirsty, but then figured, oh ya, it was all the paddling.:)

  3. You guys are hardcore! Very cool about the birds, too. YAY for fresh coconut. A fun habit to have for Aaron, I say!

And is that an Anchor Steam you guys shared once on shore? My favorite beer, from my hometown. If ever you're in SF, you can tour the brewery for free; it smells AMAZING. :-)
