Sapuk Lighthouse

We drove to Sapuk, the eastern point of Weno, where there is a Japanese lighthouse from WWII. A local Witness lives near the trailhead that takes you up to the lighthouse. We parked at his home and one of his grandchildren played tour guide for us. He is the older of the two above. The younger boy decided to tag along with us too.

The lighthouse sits atop a hill and a well traveled path meanders up to it. We came across several homes, a couple rusted out cannons and dilapidated bunker or two. We stopped to speak with the people we met along the way. They live simply and seem content.

Aaron and Kathleen climbed to the top of the lighthouse.

Curtis and I stayed a level down but still enjoyed the view.

We were approached on the way up and on the way down for money. The usual story is that the lighthouse is on their land and payment is required for you to enjoy it. The going rate can be as high as $20/person. Curtis explained that we were volunteers, teaching people about the Bible and that we didn't carry any money. The man shown above accepted a couple magazines in payment.

A foot race on the lane we drove into. Training for island games.

  3. When I originally commented I clicked the "Notify me when new comments are added" checkbox and now each time a comment is added I get four e-mails with the same comment.
Is there any way you can remove me from that service?
    Appreciate it!
