Bits & Pieces

Australia

The Kowalski's home was quite comfortable.
A few days we just hung around.
Here are a few notable moments of our downtime.

Aaron taking a nap OR pretending to take a nap?!

Richard having a serious conversation with Jeffery.

Lu Lu ignoring everyone. She reminded us a bit of PJ (family feline).

Some sort of concoction for distilling.

Richard's brother and nephew, plumbers by day, working on the still.

Grilled onions and steak on the barbie.

Finishing my Rum & Cola in the car (legally). Passengers only please!

A green ant nest. According to Aaron and Richard, they are quite tasty.
They taste like citrus. Careful, though, they do bite!

Tai making damper, much like our biscuits. In Aussie, cookies are called biscuits. And food is called tucker. And a cart at the grocery store is a trolley. It's all very confusing!

Tai's sister, Sharwin is whipping cream for the damper. Tai made one damper slightly sweet to eat with jam and cream AND one savory! Yummo (a favorite expression of Sharwin)!

Australian Damper This bread made by bush settlers may be baked on the open fire or in a regular oven. As is typical of hand-me-down recipes, there are as many versions as there are bush babies. One recipe we read says to use beer instead of milk, then wrap the dough around a stick and cook over an open fire. 2 cups self-rising flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 tespoons sugar 3 tablespoons butter 1 cup milk Mix the flour, salt and sugar together in a bowl. Cut in the butter until fine crumbs form. Add milk to make a soft dough. Knead lightly on floured board until smooth. Shape into round loaf, brush with milk, and bake at 375 degrees F. for 30 to 40 minutes, or until the loaf makes a hollow sound when tapped.

This is Richard's survival stove. It is a large can with holes in it.
It burns methane, a byproduct of distilling.

Richard cooked a lamb roast one night for dinner.

Enjoying lamb roast and damper!

Dinner out at a favorite Mexican restaurant of the Kowalski's and the Hill's.
The hats were Sharwin's idea. Notice, she's not in the picture! Hmmm!

  4. Looks like a very fun time. Cool to have Rum and Coke already mixed in a can. Interesting you can ride in a car and drink. They looked like very lovely host and hostesses.
