The best spot on Guam that we have visited to date! David, a new Bible student, showed us the way to an area that at one time was occupied by military families. The military has since vacated the property and torn down all the homes. Ownership has reverted back to the original family owners and is now mostly overrun by jungle. The Pangelinan family has laid claim to their property. They've blocked off the road and put up no trespassing signs, thus blocking access to this beautiful treasure—Ague Cove.
However, on Guam, no trespassing signs are taken a little lighter than in Oregon. We crossed over the cable and walked down the road. As we neared its end we came to a large canopy. The family was making breakfast and enjoying the morning on their land. We asked permission to hike down to the cove and were permitted to pass. Their only request was that we bring out our garbage which of course we did (even carried out garbage left behind along the trail by others).
The trail-head was tough to make out. Without David I don't think we would have spotted it. The hike down was steep and slippery in places (I slipped a couple times). We had to work our way thru tall grass-like plants with serrated edges and avoid spider webs that stretched across the trail. And the spiders are BIG!
David kept saying "We're almost there!" And then when we thought it would never end, the water came into view!
As you can see, the water is so beautiful! The pool is deep and full of life—brightly painted fish and crabs of various sizes. Fresh, cool water mixes with the briny sea water. The cove is encircled with tall cliffs overgrown with vegetation. The only sounds to be heard are the gentle lap of the waves on the limestone and the prattle of bits of coral and stone as the waves pull them from the shore.
Imagine yourself floating weightlessly, as the tide rocks you gently, gazing up at the clouds as velvety, black butterflies flutter by. Hear the persistent clicking beneath the water surface. Relax and enjoy!
One last look as we head up the trail. We had to stop a few times along the way to catch our breath. We were more than happy to reach the top—soaked with perspiration. Just as we emerged from the jungle the clouds broke open and it began to rain as we walked out to our car along the road.
What a beautiful spot—can't wait to go back!
Next time we bring mosquito repellent!
What a great slide show. Those pictures are incredible. Beautiful water and rock formations. Just awesome!
ReplyDeleteWow! Talk about a hike definitely worth the effort. Nice poetic commentary as well...hope you don't mind, but I imagined Morgan Freeman saying it.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing. Fantastic!
