Spelunking in Talofofo Caves

Beaches & Hikes

There are about six caves scattered throughout this site, and it's a good idea to go with someone who knows their way around the area. We went with Tawnya Sorter and her daughter, Devin. There are no signs telling you where each cave is located. It was quite an adventure walking—sometimes crawling— through them, feeling the cold air that blows through the cuts in the cliff, while marveling at the stalactites and stalagmites. Simply beautiful!

NOTICE Jared in the background—hamming it up!

Miyuki (lady in red) and Vanessa arranged the outing

We did crawl thru some tight spaces but not this one.

The cave walls are limestone, sedimentary rock composed largely of coral and shell.

These are ancient Chamorro pictographs on the walls and ceiling.

We crawled thru a passage out onto this cliff. Beyond where I'm standing (in blue, on the far right) there is a drop covered in dense jungle. Aaron is standing on an outcrop about 10 feet up taking these photos. This was our view—absolutely gorgeous!

This is where we found the passage or wind tunnel to the cliffs edge.
This was the largest of the cave openings.

This is a hermit crab we found along the trail thru the jungle.
A scavenger, now doubt gorging on the fruit of a citrus tree we found him under.

There is one cave that drops 50 feet down a very steep path. There is a rope to help you repel down. We did not drop down into it this time—perhaps the next time.

We rested here below Kissing Rock before hiking back down to the car.

Enjoying a striking view of the water!
