Marbo Cave

Beaches & Hikes

Saturday afternoon we went to Marbo Cave. We picked up Joe and Phyllis Flowers at their house and then met another car-full of friends to caravan out to the site. There is a short hike down to the cave's opening. Marbo Cave is a flank margin limestone cave filled with freshwater from underground. We enjoyed a refreshing swim and jumped off rocks into the crystal clear water within the cave. In some areas of the cave the water is as deep as 30 feet, and there are underwater tunnels leading to other open caverns filled with freshwater. Afterward we met at Mermaid Tavern for dinner. Mermaid has become one of our favorite places. They brew their own beer. Reminds us a little of home—since Portland (and by extension, Salem) DOES have to most microbrews per capita (or so I've been told).
