Pohnpei { Day Three }

Nahlap Island

Our timing was perfect! On the first Sunday of each month an English talk and Watchtower study are held in the back room at the Pohnpei Kingdom Hall. During the rest of the month it is only the Watchtower study. Before and after, we enjoyed meeting and reacquainting ourselves with the friends in the congregation.

Elwihna, who was in my Pioneer Service School class, was surprised to see me. I'm not sure why! I told her, back in 2010, that I was going to visit her island someday.

On Wednesday evening, we attended the meeting again. Only the Congregation Bible Study was held in English. The rest of the meeting was in Pohnpeian. It's not easy to stay awake in a hot building with no aircon (AC), especially when you cannot understand a single word. Of course the structure of the meeting was the same so at least we knew what was going on.

 After driving for an hour, stopping to view "Chicken Poop Mountain" (left) and purchase Pohnpeian skirts, we arrived at this dock. Yes, the boat is part of the dock. A water taxi arrived shortly after our arrival. The crew loaded our stuff onto the boat.

Nahlap Island ahead

We were not sure what to expect. Unbeknownst to us, our friends had brought food to share. The staff on the island unloaded our coolers and snorkel gear for us, we were ushered to a BBQ pit, chairs were set out for us and a cabana reserved for our use. The island was rustic and quaint.

When it comes to BBQ, the women of Pohnpei know their stuff. Our hosts set to work immediately. We enjoyed a meal of chicken, fish, salads and other goodies they had brought with them. We were most grateful for their hospitality and friendship. Our afternoon at Nahlap was an experience we certainly would not have had without their generosity.

We snorkeled and swam. Herriet caught some fish with a line and hook. 

The kids played. The adults laughed and talked.

 

We enjoyed a delicious meal!

Haruko (above, far left) was our tour guide and constant companion. She lovingly arranged for our afternoon of fun. Although, I don't think it was too difficult to convince anyone to spend time swimming and playing in the sunshine. The friends love to get together for BBQ. Either way, for us it was a real treat!

All good things must come to an end! We headed back just before the sun went down.

The drive home was a little crazy. After dark the road becomes a pedestrian thoroughfare. 

One has to be cautious not to hit someone!
