Valparaiso

After the convention, we checked out of our hotel, rented a car, and drove to Valparaiso

on the coast of Chile. Along the way we stopped at Indomita Casablanca Winery.

We were the only wine tasters present.

Between 1883 and 1916, some 30 funiculars were constructed to connect the businesses of the lower town with the residential districts on the hills above. Only 16 of them remain today and are officially listed as National Monuments.

We walked around the lower part of town but quickly discovered it had gone into a decline. There was graffiti everywhere and many old and new(ish) buildings were boarded up. It seemed our Airbnb was on the edge of what might be considered a sketchy area. At that point, we determined to explore further north and south of Valparaiso; and not to walk around after dark. That said, our Airbnb felt very safe, featuring a secure parking garage and 24-hour security.

Later that evening, we drove deeper into the hills to dine at Giardino Malandrino, 
a restaurant recommended by one of the GHD employees we met in Santiago.
