Fono

Chuuk consists of eleven major islands and forty-six smaller ones within the lagoon—plus forty-one on the fringing coral reef.

One such island, within sight of Weno (Moen) and less than three miles away, is Fono.
The island has between 400 and 500 inhabitants (depending on the source).

The people of Fono had not received a witness for a couple years. Aaron prepared a simple
presentation in Chuukese to use in the ministry. It went something like this:

The first column is ENGLISH. Second column is CHUUKESE. Third column is PHONETIC.

We approached the island slowly, looking for the mayor so that we could ask permission to
share our message with the island residents. He had no problem with it but suggested that we seek
the permission of the chief as well. We did and permission was granted.

We disembarked and our day of walking/hiking began—approximately 30+ homes to visit.
Four of us worked the inside of the island and two worked the shoreline.

This is the main road. From here it breaks off into trails.

There are many children—all curious to see foreigners.

Most have a respect for the Bible and are happy to talk with us.

The homes range from this concrete, two story building to make-shift shacks.

We stopped to have lunch. Not a bad view!

This little girl was wearing a Pohnpeian-style skirt—all the rage in Chuuk. I got many compliments on my own.

The local boys on Guam are always saying how good the Chuukese are at basketball. We came across a game on Fono.

Showing a Become Jehovah's Friend video to the children.

Hiking down from a home.

A short rest in the shade before we left the island. A successful day! We were able to visit all the homes on Fono.

Enroute to Pisiwi (pronounce PEE SEE WEE), a tiny little island where we swam before heading back to Weno.

We were ill-prepared so we swam in our dress clothes.
Happily us girls had swim trunks under our skirts. The boys swam in their khakis.
It was a most pleasant day!

  2. Absolutely beautiful. What a wonderful experience to go to the small islands and preach and enjoy the beauty. Who says Jehovah's people don't enjoy life?
