Mamu Rainforest Canopy Walkway

Australia

The Mamu Rainforest Canopy Walkway is in the traditional country of the Mamu Aboriginal people. Their country extends from the mountains to the coast. Within Mamu country, five clan groups share a common language and have traditional responsibilities for different areas. The rainforest is in the Waribara clan country—Waribara means "people belonging to the gorges".

The rainforest canopy walkway is in the heart of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area. The surrounding rainforest, protected as Wooroonooran National Park, is home to many kinds of plants and animals, including cassowaries and Lumholtz's tree-kangaroos (we didn't see these creatures except in captivity). Elevated walkways, a cantilever* and observation tower offer visitors the exhilarating experience of being high in the rainforest canopy and provide spectacular panoramic views of the rainforest.

This was the strangest banana.

We enjoyed a leisurely stroll through the rainforest at various heights. The view was marvelous. The trees were full of life—birds, butterflies, fruit and flowers. Word of warning: If you have a fear of heights, this may not be for you.

*A cantilever is a beam supported on only one end. The beam carries the load to the support where it is resisted by moment and shear stress. Cantilever construction allows for overhanging structures without external bracing. Cantilevers can also be constructed with trusses or slabs.

  1. UGH!!! I dont think I could have gone out on that! How high up is the cantilever? What a view though. Are those seeds in the banana? How odd.

  2. The cantilever was 50-100 ft. from the forest floor (5-10 floors). The tower was another 50 ft. from the height of the cantilever.
